Reproductive Writes
Reproductive Writes is a guided writing workshop in a supportive space where participants can practice telling personal stories to open dialogue on abortion and build empathy and reduce stigma.
We aim to provide a welcoming, safe space for you to explore your personal story related to reproductive decisions—even if that sharing goes no further than your own page. The goal is simply to fortify your voice, giving you the words and connection to your story so you can carry it into the world in whatever way makes sense to you.
No writing experience is required, and you don’t need to share. All that’s required is a writing tool and your story.
Eight tips for impactful storytelling
Exploring your story on your own? Try these tips to guide the process or to just get started:
Stick to your story
Storytelling is 22 times more memorable than facts alone. Bring people in with vivid emotional or sensory details specific to your own experience.
Speak in your own “Mother Tongue”
Ditch generalities and legalese. Use the language that you speak when nobody is there to correct you.
— Terry Tempest Williams
Balance vulnerability with strength
The most powerful stories live in that tension—show both the tender and the fierce parts of your experience. Share your scars, not your open wounds.
— Glennon Doyle
Center compassion, not shame
Describe your past experience as though it were that of your dearest friend. Invite empathy, not judgement—from yourself and others.
Focus on emotion and insight
Convey how you felt, what you learned, and how you grew—these reflections forge deep connections.
Keep it focused
Choose one key moment or theme and let it breathe. Clarity often beats breadth.
Protect your privacy
You decide which names, dates, and details to include. Share only what you’re comfortable with.
End with purpose
Close with an insight, an affirmation, or a call to action—what change do you hope to inspire?
Share your story
"When I heard my story read out loud, I experienced deep healing. I’ve kept it a secret for so long, and sharing it allowed me to let go of the shame I still carried.”
-Abortion story contributor, after hearing their story used in a PVP stage production in their community.
