Meet sculptor & multimedia artist Ashley Rayne
From:
Boise
Medium:
I like experimenting with various mediums using art as an exploration of my mind. I do like sculptural and 3D mediums more so I can feel the process.
Motivation to create this piece:
"Lost Dreams" was inspired by the constant struggles I've experienced being a woman in this world. Growing up in a military household perpetuated the strict gender norms I was placed into. I felt small from a young age. I had to be the perfect model child. Being told what I can and can't do my whole life all in the name of safety. I was conditioned to restrict my dreams to conform to this structured view of society. I joined the Army instead of pursuing the Peace Corp because at least the 'Army' has a duty to protect their soldiers. This sculpture helped me release a lifetime of pent-up emotions and feelings so I can start to break free.

Trippy Melons
Why is this movement important to you?
Everyone has a right to their bodies and shouldn't be policed by anyone else. I was struggling with extremely painful periods while I was in the Army. When seeking treatment options, I got yelled at for asking questions about birth control and any other options I could do instead. I was told to suck it up and deal with the pain and anemia it was causing. When I got out of the Army and able to receive proper care, they found severe endometriosis and scarring which resulted in surgery and an ablation. I think being in my 30s help me get the surgery I needed. I suffered for 20 years because someone else thinks I need to have kids. This narrative shouldn't be a recurring theme that women face. Men don't need approval to get a vasectomy, but woman need to be dying in order to get treatment.
What motivates you, or inspires your art?
I use art as an emotional and mental healing outlet. Depending on what I'm struggling with currently or some experiences I've had directs the theme.
Any other interesting details you'd like to share?
"Trippy Melons" is a sculpture piece I made to emphasize women's breasts. Breasts are highly sexualized in our society and become objects for others. I wanted to blend various shapes and sizes together to give it a different meaning.
