Q&A with Meredith Bobb

Are there specific experiences and themes you explore in your art?

We never truly know what goes on within another person’s mind and how we internalize the varied, and often difficult, events of our lives is a very personal journey. With my current series The Collective, I strive to find ways to portray a person’s thought process and emotions as an external representation. Even though we are unique and diverse, below the surface there are the similarities and connections which unite us as humans having a life experience. When I paint, it is a place for me to work through the complexities of what is occurring in my life, whether within my family or from external influences.

Is there a specific message or emotion you want viewers to feel from your work?

Because my imagery is so unusual, people might need to take an extra moment to interpret what the painting might mean to them personally and how the painting effects them. At an art exhibitions of my more intense paintings, I had a viewer tell me, “it made me feel things, but that’s ok.” My work tends to be thought provoking and I think my message is that it’s good for people to give themselves permission to take a moment to slow down and allow themselves to be open to process what they are not used to seeing.

What motivates you, or inspires your art?

My motivation is the constant learning process of developing artwork that speaks to who we are as people. We all have life experiences we’re processing internally and there’s something amazing that happens when a painting which is personal to me becomes personal to the viewer.

Why do you believe in The Pro-Voice Project?

I’m thankful that the Pro-Voice Project exists here in Idaho. With two thirteen year old girls, I worry for their future staying in the state if the laws stay the way they are now. I do not know whether or not they will choose to have children, but is this a state I would want them to attempt a pregnancy? Will they be able to access the healthcare they need at any age as women? What rights will they have?

Why is this movement important to you?

I have two teenage daughters and I worry about their futures if we continue to stay in Idaho. What rights will they still have? This should concern everyone in the state of Idaho, regardless of political party.

What brought you to Idaho, and what keeps you here?

I moved to Idaho seventeen years ago due to my husband’s job. Our kids really love it here and we’re committed to stay, but I do wonder if they will want to as they get older.

What inspired you to create this piece?

I was thinking about the many choices and different events we face in our lives, trying to make the right decisions and finding the path forward. This process can be stressful enough without the pressures of government taking away women's rights and healthcare, putting our lives unnecessarily at risk.

Meredith Bobb Bio

Meredith Bobb is a contemporary artist originally from the Philadelphia area, currently residing in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Recently her work has been accepted into national juried shows at the Masur Museum in Louisiana and The International Biennial Acrylic Show in Wisconsin. In 2023, Bobb had solo shows for her series “Within Tensions” at The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and The Willard Art Center for The Idaho Falls Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited in various parts of Philadelphia, Albuquerque, and Idaho Falls. She has a Bachelors of Fine Art degree with a concentration in drawing from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania.

Bobb uses a combination of acrylic paints and markers to develop bold images that create curiosity and questions in the viewer. Current paintings involve the continued evolution of representing the figure through abstracted bone and organic forms. She combines both drawing and painting elements in her work to develop unique imagery. The meditative process of creating art has served to be a constant and reliable outlet for the artist.

Making art has always been a part of my life, with early memories of lying on the floor coloring with my crayons lined up orderly in front of me. In college I pursued my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in drawing and have exhibited my work wherever I have lived including Philadelphia, Albuquerque and Idaho. There was a pause on my artwork when I became a mom to twins thirteen years ago, but as they got older and more independent, I could pursue painting again.

My motivation to create art is the love of physically making something unique which speaks to me personally, as well as the interactions with the viewer once a painting is complete. My art isn’t traditional, nor is my creative process, and I’m learning to embrace my unique artistic journey. My artwork is a safe space where I can be free to follow my own path and create the imagery that’s important to me. I’m inspired by my life experiences and stories I encounter about other people, and find ways to put this onto the canvas.
